Understanding the Research Triangle Park

RTP was named
2nd Best Place for
Business and Careers

-- Forbes, May 2005
RTP is located in Wake and Durham counties in central North Carolina. RTP is a planned research park that was created in 1959 by business, academic and industry leaders. Originally, RTP consisted of 3,559 acres at an original purchase price of $700,000. The Park’s first tenant was the Research Triangle Institute. It is the fourth largest non-profit contract research organization in the United States. Its areas of research range from statistics to virtual reality and cochlear implants to advanced pharmaceutical projects. By 1969, the Park had grown to include 21 companies, including International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. By the end of the 1970s, 17 more companies were added to the list of tenants in the Park. By the end of the 1980s, that number grew again to total more than 65 companies. And that growth has continued until today; more than 100 companies call RTP home in more than 7,000 acres of North Carolina pine forest. It is estimated that more than 38,500 area residents are employed by companies in the Park. Source: www.rtp.org
